This is only an excerpt from the whole scene, which is theologically and rhetorically elaborate. The Archangel Gabriel ‘in a man’s likeness’ is waiting for the Virgin Mary's answer to God’s proposal that she should bear the Son. Meanwhile the whole company of Heaven hangs breathlessly on her decision.
